Friends - F. A. Q.s About Mentoring
Q: Can I specify characteristics of the child I want to work with?
A: All children need mentors, but we can
try our best to make the best match for you possible!
Q: I’m a busy person, how much is the time commitment?
A: The great thing about mentoring is that
you can fit it into your schedule! It is only 8 hours a month or one full
day, for at least 6 months.
Q: What am I going to get out of this?
A: I’m glad you asked! Not only is
it volunteer experience that you can add to your resume, but you get to build
a rewarding, positive relationship with a child who needs you. It will be a fun
friendship that is rewarding to all involved!
Q: What happens if I don’t become a mentor?
A: Besides missing out on a great relationship,
the child could remain lonely without any real consistency in their lives. Remember,
you could be that one person who makes a difference for them.
Q: How do I get started?
A: All you need to do is provide some basic
info, and sign up for a training where we will give you all of the information
you need.
Q: OK, so I become a mentor, but my match does not work out. What then?
A: PA staff is here for you to provide problem
solving and re-matching if necessary. We want you to be happy with your mentoring
experience!
Q: If
I am a mentor, can I get mileage reimbursement and can have overnight visits?
A: The nice thing about being a mentor is getting the opportunity of mileage reinbursement. When you are a mentor you can receive
mileage reimbursemt through DES. Overnight
visits are possible after a six month relationship with a child and approval
from the case manager.
