Jeff's Success Story
Jeff* was a young man in residential drug treatment working to obtain his
own housing and regain custody of his 3 year old daughter. Among many requirements
of his drug treatment, Jeff was required to attend a parenting class. Jeff did
not attend the Parenting Arizona parent education program with a chip on his
shoulder, as do many people who are court ordered or otherwise required to attend.
He demonstrated a genuine interest and willingness to learn.
Jeff not only attended all six classes of Active Parenting Now, but he also
came on time, prepared and meaningfully participated each week. He was open to
sharing his parenting experiences with other group members and was receptive
to feedback. Within the context of the class, Jeff spoke lovingly about his daughter,
demonstrating an understanding of his young daughter’s need for both nurturing
and structure. Jeff also enthusiastically shared that he was experiencing successful
adult communications as a result of using skills he learned in the parent education
class.
A few months after completion of the class, Jeff stopped by to share that
he was living in his own apartment and his daughter would be coming to live with
him full time in another month. This is an enormous accomplishment that could
not have been possible without the services provided by Parenting AZ.
