The Perez's Success Story
The Perez family is a single parent household with one child. Child Protective
Services was notified that Ms. Perez was using drugs and that her child was in
danger because of her drug use. Ms. Perez moved a year ago from Chicago with
her husband and child. Ms. Perez and Mr. Perez recently divorced, and Ms. Perez
currently resides with Mr. Perez’s biological sister. Ms. Perez informed
staff that Mr. Perez struck her on many occasions and pushed Ms. Perez into getting
addicted to pain medication.
Ms. Perez was referred to services by Child Protective Services. Ms. Perez
needed to work on keeping herself clean of drugs, using effective parenting skills,
and need counseling for domestic violence. Ms. Perez agreed to work on these
issues and informed staff that she had a long history with domestic violence
relationships.
The PA Team worked with Ms. Perez on getting her started with school, become
self-sufficient, develop effective parenting skills, and get counseling services
to address the domestic violence in her life. The PA Team also helped Ms. Perez
with finding free daycare (provided by CPS) and find affordable and reliant transportation.
Ms. Perez currently has a 4.0 GPA and is attending school to become a medical
assistant. Ms. Perez was able to find a job at her school and now is a teacher’s
assistant part time. Ms. Perez meets regularly with PA Team and follows through
with all suggestions team provides. Since the beginning of services, Ms. Perez
has been able to keep herself clean from drug use and has been an exceptional
mother.
Even though the PA Team has made great progress with Ms. Perez and her family,
the PA Team feels that if Parenting Arizona had an emergency housing fund available
for our families, the team could help Ms. Perez move from her sister-in-law’s
dysfunctional household to a healthier and safer home.
